Being home this past week has allowed me to realize how grateful I am for my family. Saturday and Sunday were big days as two of my cousins graduated from college. Kristine graduated from University of Detroit Mercy with a Bachelors in Science and Nursing and Dan graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering- both with honors. Those two days were excruciatingly long, but I could not imagine myself anywhere else besides celebrating with family in their accomplishments.

With that said they really set the bar high for me next year. Let’s hope for a successful summer and senior year.

Congratulations is also due to Mari Grigaliunas as well! One of my closest friends and sophomore year roommate graduated from Loyola University Chicago a year early with a Bachelors in Journalism and Peace Studies.

Congrats Mari, Kristine and Dan!

Rewind: Still in a European state of mind.

Before I left for Rome, I had a picture of a gorgeous beach view that I found on Google as my desktop background. Not until I was Google searching photographs of Cinque Terre did I realize that my background had a been a view of Riomaggiore , the first and southern most town of Cinque Terre. From that point, I was ecstatic to visit the 5 towns.

On April 1st, we took a train to La Spezia then through the towns. Our first stop was Monarola, nicknamed “I’m on a rolla,” because we were staying in a small town called Volastra about 30 minutes up the hill. We stopped at a restaurant and indulged in Cinque Terre pesto, a true specialty. We had no idea what kind of adventure awaited us.

That night, we made dinner at the apartment and woke up early in the morning to hike and explore. The towns are connected by cliff/sea trails, but most of them were closed for the season due to landslides. We arrived in Monterosso, the most commercial of the five with the nicest beach, and found a place to stay for that night. It was prime location- on the main street and steps away from the sand.

The next day was strictly a beach day. We had daquiris and pina coladas at the beach, which were made at a bar where they were playing country music- hilarious. We took the Via dell’Amore trail to Riomaggiore and it was the most colorful walk I’d ever taken. With breaks to walk down rocks to the water and a graffiti tunnel, I didn’t even notice the hour it took to walk. There were many locks along the way and some pictures taken that rival my old desktop background.

That night we had dinner at the guys’ apartment. They were staying at Corniglia, one of the five towns. They had a spectacular view. Thinking about people who have lived in that environment all of their lives makes you really examine your life. The peacefulness and serenity versus the big city life. Some of the crew was sitting on the roof and neighbors across the way spotted them and called the landlord. She immediately ran over and told them to step down. Their sense of authenticity and community is something I wouldn’t be able to grasp in a lifetime.

We went to a very American bar that night as well and I spent some time at the beach before bed.

The next day we shopped and soaked in the sun before our inevitably unfortunate departure.

Interfaith week at the Rome Center this week is filled with activities for the students to immerse themselves in diverse spirituality.

Today I visited the Jewish Ghetto in Rome. About 25 of us were led by Janis Fine to the Tiber River to remind us of the series of events leading up to the formation of the ghettos. We went to the museum and the biggest of the 16 synagogues in Rome. It was gorgeous. The square shaped dome, the only one in Rome, is painted with the colors of the rainbow. This is symbolic for the rainbow after the flood- Gods promise for the human capacity of transcendence. I also interpreted it as the game of colors which represent emotions that bring forth an aesthetic experience, which as a result, draws us closer to the will. So much more could be said about the Torahs and textiles that were in the museum- I was completely blown away by the detail and exquisite beauty in each of the artifacts.

Yesterday, we were able to watch a movie titled The Garden of the Finzi-Continis with a brief explanation by my film professor, Dr. DiBiagi. A wonderfully nostalgic film by De Sica, director of The Bicycle Thief, leaves enough blanks in the film to stimulate the imagination.

Tomorrow morning, we will visit a site where Jews were persecuted and end the week with a Seder dinner. Loyola never ceases to surprise me when it comes to going the extra mile to solidify the truly important moral teachings of life.
